I would like to comment though on the idea that in order to create usable products, a company needs to hire analytical designers (instead of "artistic" designers). As you are mentioning here as well, in the end the process is key.
I've done very successful projects with highly intuitive and 'non-analytical' designers. I think the key is to safe guard the application of user-centered design methods (which does not purely need to be -each- designer's responsibility).

I'm know there are designers who do not believe in human centered design at all. But I also believe that there is a large group of designers (some of them "artistic") who believe in user centered design, not because they are analytical, but because they experience that the process and methods result in support and inspiration. And I think that if human centered design methods are applied well, that is exactly what they do: not just provide a strong foundation for design, but also inspire the design process.

Of course, this is assuming designers working in a team, with others leading the user-centered design process, whether by researchers, 'strategists', or potentially more analytical designers.
