Especially the first, continued sentence in red clarifies the situation (at least to me) quite a bit.

However, I also must admit I'm not sure if I get your latter part (also in red, starting with "And, assuming that..."); if a product is aimed for a new target group, all bets are off anyhow what comes to previous user understanding. There might be two issues at play here: a) to develop a product for a new segment/market/etc and b) create a new UI for existing product. What I understand you said in the paragraph makes sense for case B, but if one wants to pursue option A one needs/should do research anyhow, regardless of innovating in UI or not.

Btw, in case you haven't heard this before, your postings have been very pleasant to read! :)

FIRST ITERATION

Why is it that innovating diminishes knowledge of design solutions? Shouldn't it work the other way around? Why does this has anything to do with the knowledge of user group? Shouldn't it be that the original design is made with less knowledge of the user group? Also, not introducing some changes runs the risk of not having better usability.

It might mean by UI innovations you are referring to something more specific, in which case defining that would be helpful.

You might be correct on all of the above, but whether or not that's the case more clarifications would be appreciated.
